Stalking the Poem

Stalking the Poem

The Poet must be a detective
who warily tracks an idea
and charms words to confess
an emotional articulation of image.
Clues pieced together
form line and stanza
which are closely examined
as if under a magnifying glass
then rearranged for effect and revelation.
The sleuth must ascertain
guilt or innocence of black on white.
The guilty are punished
with exile
and the innocent set free.
